Hasselblad CFV II 50C

English

 私の場合は、もしCFV II 50Cを購入することが出来たら、真っ先にカラーのブローニーフィルムの代わりに使うと思う。その理由は;

  • Carl Zeiss Planar C80mm f2.8 T*
  • Carl Zeiss Distagon C60mm f3.5 T*
  • Carl Zeiss Sonnar C150mm

  • Leitz Summilux 35mm
  • Leitz Summilux 50mm
  • Cosina Voigtlander NOKTON 35mm f1.2 II ASPH

Let analogue V series be Digital

For the last several years, my main gear to take film photography is Hasselblad 503CX, which belongs to Hasselblad V series family. Since it was launched in 1988, of course, the original recording medium is film. However, Hasselbald announced that they launch new “Digital back” which can be added to the traditional Hasselblad V series camera instead of the film magazine like A12 type.

Focalplane shutter

In 1940’s, Dr.Victor Hasselblad launched the 1st medium format Single-lens reflex camera with 6X6 medium format as 1600F / 1000F series. It had the focalplane shutter

Lens Shutter

After that, the market started to require the strobe full speed synchronization. 1600F / 1000F series wrere difficult to adapt into the new requirement. As the new solution, Hasselblad launched V series with Lens Shutter. There are two types of V series. One is SW ( Supreme Wide) series, of which lens is fixed with the excellent Biogon by Carl Zeiss. Another one was 500 series which has optional lenses by Carl Zeiss and some other 3rd parties.

My gear is Hasselblad 503CX which belongs to 500 series.

Film size & film magazine

Hasselblad V series cameras has film magazine with 6 X 6 medium format film size, while the majority of the film camera use 135 type film.

The most unique feature of the V series is that film magazine can be separated with just one-tough operation. That’s quite useful when you go shooting.

Such one touch operation is impossible for analogue cameras of NIKON F series, Canon EOS series and Leica M seriece once you put 135 film into them since the film fixation portion is not cartridge look a like as V series of Hasselblad.

In my case, whenever I go shooting with Hasselblad 503CX, I bring three A12 film magazines, which I put the different types of film, for exapmle, ISO 100 & 400 monochrome film and some color film. According to the shooting scene and the condition, I can change the A12 film magazine as if I have three cameras with different films.

As your reference

CFV II 50C fascinating points

How nice the digital back is!

The aspect of digital magazine is looking very similar into A12 film magazine. But it has digital image sensor to record the scene of your shot. This means that just today, my ( and your ) traditional Hasselblad V series camera suddenly become the latest advanced digital camera.

Design

As if the only film part of A12 film magazine is replaced into the advanced digital image sensor. The analogue film magazine become “Digital back” to record your shot. The shape is very similar into A12 film magazine, although it is more thick. When you put the digital back on Hasserlblad 500 series or SW series cameral body to replace A12 magazine, the overall design of the camera still keep the original iconic analogue Hasselblad aspect.

How to utilize

Anyone has different ideas. In my case, if I get CFV II 50C, as the 1st priority, I will use it of color image. Because ;.

  • Color films are becoming more and more expensive
  • The selection of brownie color film (120) is limited.
  • Still prefer traditional wet process in case of monochrome photo

Sensor size

One of the most well-known professional senior photographer, Mr.Koichi Akagi, is reporting about CFV II 50C. The report tells us that the sensor size about 44 x 33mm. Not same as the 6 X 6 size of 120 film. He never mentioned. But one of reason must be cost issue to realize relatively lower price than previous CFV series.

In case of digital camera, like Canon EOS series originally from 135 film camera, there are “Full size model” and APS-C mode. APS-C model has relatively smaller surface area of image sensor. Same as this, the image sensor of CFV II 50C is smaller than 6X6 with similar reason as above case, I guess.

I think, if Hasselblad arrange “Full size model” of digital back with same as 6X6 size, the selling price can be not less than 1.1 million USD.

Enjoy old timer excellent lenses

 Even if it is not full-size 6 X 6 image sensor, I believe that it is extremely great opportunity that we can enjoy the shooting with the past excellent lenses, attaching digital back. In my case, I use follow lenses for Hasselblad 503CX to create the traditional printing with wet processing;

  • Carl Zeiss Planar C80mm f2.8 T*
  • Carl Zeiss Distagon C60mm f3.5 T*
  • Carl Zeiss Sonnar C150mm

In the past ( 50’s to 80’s), it was impossible for amateur photographers to utilize such expensive lenses for professionals. But the price of old lenses are gradually going down. resulting into acceptable range for me too. But of course, it is still excellent lenses produced by Carl Zeiss. The printing is really nice. We can utilize such excellent traditional lens with digital CFV 50C II. It is one of the most fascinating points to install it into your system.

Concerning points?

Price

Although the cost reduction must be applied with relatively smaller sensor size than 6X6, the price is still not in cheaper range. In Japan, new one has still over 800,000 JPY.

On the other hand, the price of color film and monochrome film is higher and higher. In case of my consumption rate of films, the cost for 4 years reach same level of the price of the CFV II 50C . If the aging performance and maintenance cost of CFV 50C II are different issue. But the cost aspect might be considerable driving force to buy it.

Exactness

Digital image sensor of CFV II 50C must require dimensional exactness to record perfect view. I use A12 film magazine, totally three for one 503CX camera body. During shooting nature land, change frequently the film magazine to apply different film in shorter time. According to frequent replacement, I’m afraid that the attaching surface or some hitting portion between camera body and film magazine, some slight wearing might happen….. Shooting with film might be still OK. But in case of the new digital back, it is really no problem? In next year, I must go into serious considering stage to buy it. But in advance, I should visit the service office of Hasselblad Japan and ask and confirm with them about this concerning point.

Cleaning

Just chatting with Mr.Akagi on Twitter about CFV II 50C. He put very high importance on the frequent cleaning. Especially he indicate if back shutter of camera body is not clean, the image sensor also can get dust or some pollution easier. It is not closed system. It might be one of the considerable negative point. Continue to watch the review by professional photographers if the cleaning issue has some difficult point for amateurs.

Plan

In 2020, I would like to purchase one gear among Cano EOS R5, R6 or 5D Mark V. Then in 2021, would like to select Leica M10 Monochrome or Hasselblad CFV II 50C. Continue to watch reviews, visiting Leica Store Kyoto and Hasselblad Japan to ask several questions before the purchasing.
